Indirect Resource vs Direct Resource in Saju: The Inherited Wisdom and the Self-Taught Gift
The Resource star (印星) in Saju splits into two faces: Direct Resource (正印) and Indirect Resource (偏印). Both are the element that generates the Day Master — but a single yin-yang match difference turns one into a stable inherited education and the other into an unconventional, self-taught talent. Three engine-measured charts show why it matters.
In an earlier piece on where support shows in a saju chart, we treated "Resource" (印星) as one thing. Like the Officer, Output, and Wealth stars before it, it isn't. It splits into Direct Resource (正印) and Indirect Resource (偏印) — both the element that generates the Day Master, both read as "support," yet one reads like a doting birth mother and the other like a distant, unconventional teacher. The same rule that split Direct Officer from Seven Killings, Eating God from Hurting Officer, and Direct Wealth from Indirect Wealth splits Resource too: yin-yang match. Three engine-measured charts show why the distinction changes how a chart actually reads.
The split comes down to one thing: yin-yang match
The Ten Gods system classifies every other pillar's relationship to the Day Master by two things: the five-element generating cycle, and whether yin-yang matches. The Resource relationship — the element that generates the Day Master — is no exception.
- Direct Resource (正印): the generating element has the opposite polarity from the Day Master.
- Indirect Resource (偏印): the generating element has the same polarity as the Day Master.
Say the Day Master is 乙 (yin Wood). The element that generates Wood is Water. If 壬 (yang Water) shows up, polarity differs — that's Direct Resource. If 癸 (yin Water) shows up, polarity matches — that's Indirect Resource. Same "Water generates Wood" relationship, but one polarity flip changes the entire texture of the support.
Here's where the pattern re-confirms itself for a third time. The Officer and Wealth stars both ran opposite-polarity-is-gentle (Direct Officer and Direct Wealth calm and steady). The Output star ran the opposite direction (Eating God, same polarity, was the calm one). Resource follows the Officer and Wealth's direction: opposite polarity (Direct Resource) is gentle and stable, same polarity (Indirect Resource) is unconventional and sharp. Traditional practice reads Direct Resource as "a birth mother's care" — formal education, stable sponsorship, credentials and diplomas that open doors cleanly. Indirect Resource has historically been called the "Owl God" (梟神) and treated with suspicion — support that arrives outside the normal channel: self-taught skill, unconventional fields like arts, counseling, alternative medicine, or divination, or a sharp intuition that formal schooling never gave you. Support that's handed to you cleanly versus a gift you have to dig up yourself — two very different textures inside the same category.
Case 1 — A weak chart with clean Direct Resource

A trace of 壬 Water also sits in the hidden stems of the Month branch (申), reinforcing it. The Ten Gods count shows Direct Resource at 1.3, Indirect Resource at 0: this chart carries pure Direct Resource only.
With a weak Day Master (power 17) and Direct Resource sitting in the Hour pillar (the late-life, harvest position), traditional practice reads this as a chart with a steadying hand that keeps it from collapsing — formal education, a stable sponsor, or credentials (diplomas, licenses) that build a career foundation cleanly. The chart also runs heavy on Fire (2.8, in excess), which drains a Wood Day Master's energy — Direct Resource's Water element does double duty here, both nurturing the Day Master and offsetting that Fire excess. With Peach Blossom, Traveling Horse, Hermit, and Nobleman stars all present, this reads as a mobile, magnetic type who also carries genuine scholarly depth.
Case 2 — A weak chart with clean Indirect Resource

The hidden stems of both the Year branch (酉) and the Day branch (丑) carry 辛 Metal — yin Metal, same polarity as 癸 (yin Water) — that's Indirect Resource. The Ten Gods count shows Indirect Resource at 1.1, Direct Resource at 0: pure Indirect Resource only.
Traditional practice reads a chart with prominent Indirect Resource as one that gains strength outside the standard educational path rather than through it. This Day Master is weak (power 34) with no Direct Resource sponsorship at all — only Indirect Resource — suggesting a structure where the person has to dig up and master things nobody formally taught them. Older texts called Indirect Resource the "Owl Star" (梟神殺) and treated it as inauspicious, largely because this self-taught, unconventional path lacks the stability of a formal one. Modern readings reinterpret it more generously: expertise in arts, counseling, divination, or alternative medicine — fields outside the standard curriculum. This chart also carries Peach Blossom, Hermit, White Tiger, and Resentment stars, suggesting a type where unusual intuition and heightened sensitivity coexist.
Case 3 — Direct and Indirect Resource coexisting, balanced chart

The Hour stem carries 壬 (yang Water, opposite polarity from 乙) — Direct Resource — while the hidden stems in the Year branch (子) and Day branch (亥) carry 癸 and 壬 respectively, giving both Indirect and Direct Resource a presence. The Ten Gods count shows Indirect Resource at 1.1 and Direct Resource at 1.7 — Direct Resource is slightly stronger, but both are clearly present and coexisting.
What makes this chart interesting is the balanced Day Master (59). A chart with only Direct Resource reads as "smoothly formal-education type"; one with only Indirect Resource reads as "unconventionally self-taught type." When both coexist and the Day Master has enough strength to hold them, traditional practice reads it as a structure that can run both channels — building on a formal foundation (credentials, degrees — Direct Resource) while also expanding into a specialized, less-trodden field (Indirect Resource). A weaker Day Master would struggle to manage both resource types at once and likely scatter its efforts instead. This chart also carries the Resentment star (怨嗔煞), adding a note of caution: friction with mentors or seniors is more likely than friction over the resources themselves.
What separates the three cases

Direct Resource tells you how cleanly the support is handed to you; Indirect Resource tells you how unconventional and self-earned that support is. Neither is inherently superior — what actually determines the outcome is whether the Day Master has the strength to make use of that resource's character. A chart with only Direct Resource isn't necessarily unremarkable, and a chart with only Indirect Resource isn't necessarily unstable — it comes down to how much of that resource element the Day Master can actually absorb.
Limitations
The interpretations above are editorial commentary on hypothetical birth dates (including birth time) measured with the saju engine — not real individuals' charts. The element distributions and Day Master strength are objective figures calculated by the engine, but the interpretations drawn from those figures are extensions of traditional Mingli (明理) philosophy, not scientific causation.
